Still close to 2 feet of ice

I had two reports from people this week who were at Canoe Lake last weekend and cut through the ice. Both said that there was about 2 feet of ice still on the lake! Although one person said that it seemed to be "low quality" ice—not as clear and solid as in mid-winter.

UPDATE: From Russ & Jill Matthews, who were on Canoe Lake this past weekend... "We are just back from a great weekend at the cottage. The weather was beautiful and not very cold. The ice is at least 2.5 feet thick, so you might want to reconsider your ice out date!"

60 predictions so far

We're up to 60 votes so far, after only 48 hours. Keep 'em coming--I'd love to beat last year's 87, and maybe hit 100!

Survey says... April 30th

Wow! I received 47 emails today and 14 of them picked April 30th (that's 30%). I don't think I've ever seen an early consensus like this before.

All the picks received today have been added to the 2008 predictions page. Keep 'em coming.

Submitting a prediction

A few people have emailed to ask how they should submit a prediction. As swanky as this new web site is, it does not (currently) let you vote online, so just email me with your date.

I'll try to update the 2008 predictions page once each evening to include new dates submitted that day.

Please sign up for the mailing list

Our new site features a mailing list that will make it easier for us to communicate with you about All Things Ice-Out, but it is important that you sign yourself up since we won't be adding addresses manually and we'll only be using the list to communicate.

All you have to do is enter your name and email address over there on the right sidebar, and click 'Subscribe'. You will be sent an email with a link for you to confirm your request -- just click that link and you're all done.

If you have problems or questions just email 'iceout' at 'canoelake.ca' (see contact link on the sidebar).

A new home for ice-out!

Welcome to the swanky new home of Canoe Lake Ice-Out.

I've wanted for years to move this site to a 'proper' system that gives me more control, manages archived posts, supports mailing lists, has an RSS feed, and all sorts of good stuff. And now I have it!

I'll be sending out the official announcement of this year's ice-out challenge tomorrow, but for now, welcome—please take a look around and make yourself at home.
