I have finally caught up on the latest predictions -- we're up to 120 now, and the trend is moving earlier. I'll update the graphs and post again on the weekend.
March 2009 Archives
Apologies to everyone who has submitted a date since my last update - I've been out of town 14 of the last 18 days and just haven't had time to update this site. But I'm back in the saddle now and have about 30 new dates to post. I've also got some photos and reports from the Canoe Lake area.
For those of you who are dying to know what's happening, it seems to me that March has been consistently warmer than last year, and despite the cold winter and thick ice I think we are looking at an earlier than average ice-out this year. How much earlier? That I'm not prepared to predict... yet :-)
So stay tuned! I'll have the new dates, news, and a photo or two up by this weekend.
I've finally posted the first batch of votes over on the 2009 predictions page, and it's a big one -- 85!
Almost exactly half of the people so far have picked a date between April 23rd and April 27th, within two days of last year's ice out date. And yet, amazingly, no one has picked April 26th :-)
Edit: Spoke too soon! My father has jumped on April 26th :-)
Hello and welcome to the 2009 Canoe Lake Ice-out web site and poll. Somehow this winter feels like it's gone on forever. I received the first email of the 2009 season a few weeks ago from John Manson who wrote simply "Too much winter, I need to dream of the start of 2009 season." I couldn't agree more.
Below are a few photos from a trip to Canoe Lake two weeks ago, February 14th-16th. The conditions were incredible -- the entire lake was like a skating rink! There is a lot of solid ice this year -- at least two feet. But as always, ice-out is determined more by the weather in the last week of March and the first two weeks of April than anything else.
Stay tuned to the site for updates on conditions on Canoe Lake (and other Algonquin lakes).
